Community Hospital Offers Carbohydrate Counting Class

New Port Richey, Florida (February 24, 2010) – Community Hospital now offers a Carbohydrate Counting Class, entitled Easy Eating for Diabetics. The next class will be held on March 24. Classes will continue to be presented on the fourth Wednesday of every month at 9:30 AM by Bridget Shapiro, Registered Dietitian. The classes are offered at Community Hospital, 5637 Marine Parkway, New Port Richey, Florida 34652.

Individuals who have been diagnosed with diabetes should “carbohydrate count.” Carbohydrates in food affect a diabetic’s blood glucose levels, and the class is designed to educate diabetics on how they can better control their levels through diet. Participants in the “carbohydrate counting” class will learn:

  • The myths surrounding the “diabetic diet”
  • Sources of carbohydrates in the diet
  • Why carbohydrates are so important for proper energy
  • How many carbohydrates diabetics need to consume in a meal/day
  • How to eat your favorite foods and not feel guilty
